How to Keep Your Passport Safe in Europe

Prepare for busy places without treating every trip as a threat

Official UK advice identifies pickpocketing risks around Italian tourist attractions and city centres, while noting that overall crime levels are generally low. Its France advice highlights theft on the Paris Métro, RER and at mainline stations. These are reasons to plan, not evidence that every European destination is unsafe.

Before leaving a hotel or changing trains, make a quick check part of your routine: passport secured, bag closed, phone accounted for. Choose a consistent passport compartment so that checking does not mean unpacking your bag in a crowd.

Should you carry your passport or leave it at the hotel?

There is no single answer for all of Europe. Check the destination’s current identification requirements and the documents needed for that day’s journey. Do not assume a photograph will satisfy an identity check or permit international travel.

When carrying the original, use a closed inner compartment you can keep under your control. Separate it from everyday cash and cards where practical. When leaving it behind is permitted and appropriate, assess the accommodation’s secure storage rather than leaving it loose in a room or unattended bag.

Build a backup you can use without your usual phone

Our suggested test: imagine your day bag is unavailable. Can you still identify your embassy, access essential booking information and contact someone? Resolve those gaps before departure.

• Keep a securely stored passport copy separate from the original; it is a reference, not a replacement travel document.
• Save your issuing authority’s official emergency contact, accommodation address and booking references for offline access.
• Work out how you would contact someone you trust if both phone and passport disappeared.
• Check the documents and reporting conditions your travel insurer requires; do not assume all extra costs are covered.

Add a recovery contact route before you travel

An optional contact card or recovery QR on a removable passport cover can give a finder a way to contact you. Keep official passport markings unobstructed and follow your issuing authority’s instructions. Test the contact route from another device.

If the passport disappears

Ask the issuing authority what to do if the document is recovered after reporting. Recovery does not by itself restore a cancelled passport’s validity.
