Passport Contact Details: Help a Finder Without Oversharing

Use official passport fields as instructed

If your passport has an emergency-contact field, follow the issuing authority’s instructions for completing it. A separate recovery card is an additional contact option; it does not replace any official requirement.

For an optional recovery label, our recommendation is to use a removable cover or separate card rather than alter the passport booklet. Keep the identity page, machine-readable area, chip and official markings unobstructed. Ask your passport authority if you are unsure about permitted placement.

Compare three contact approaches

Choose the option you will actually monitor. Test it from another device before travelling, and check whether it still makes sense if your phone is lost alongside your passport.

• Phone number: a finder can try calling you, but anyone who sees the number can copy it. Overseas reachability and roaming depend on your service.
• Dedicated email address: separates recovery enquiries from your usual inbox address, but you must monitor it and protect the account.
• Private recovery QR: lets a finder open a contact page without displaying your phone number or email on the label. It depends on the service and an internet connection.

Keep identity documents out of public posts

The Australian Passport Office notes that passports contain key identity information that criminals may use for identity fraud. Before sharing a copy, ask the organisation what information it needs and how you should provide it securely.

When asking a hotel, airline or local group for help, begin with the minimum information needed to identify the incident. Send identity documents only through a verified private channel when they are genuinely required. A photograph that hides only the portrait can still expose the name, document number or machine-readable text.

Understand what a recovery QR does not hide

A recovery QR does not conceal the information already printed in the passport. It also is not a password: someone who has the QR can open its finder page. Keep screenshots of your personal recovery code and private conversation links off public social posts.

A short pre-trip privacy check
