Lost Passport at a Hotel: What to Do Next

Start with a controlled ten-minute search

1. Return to the last moment you used the passport—check-in, the room safe, reception, a currency desk or a tour counter.
2. Empty bags and jacket pockets fully. Check inside the passport holder, between documents and underneath removable luggage linings.
3. Look around the safe, desk, bedside table, charging area, bathroom, bedding and the space beside or behind furniture.
4. If housekeeping has entered, stop moving items and contact reception so staff can check the room, linen route and lost-property process.

Ask the hotel to open a formal lost-property case

• Give the room number, checkout status, time last seen and a non-sensitive description of the passport holder.
• Ask reception to check with housekeeping, security, laundry, the room safe process and the hotel’s official lost-property store.
• Request a case or reference number and note the staff member, date and time.
• Leave a reliable contact method, but do not send a full passport scan through an informal messaging account.
• If you have already checked out, ask how identity will be verified before an item is released or shipped.

Decide whether it may have been stolen

If a bag, wallet or other valuables are also missing—or there are signs of unauthorized room access—tell hotel security and contact local police. Ask for a written report or reference number. Your passport authority, insurer or replacement application may request it.

Do not confront another guest or staff member. Preserve times, receipts and access information and let hotel security or police handle the investigation.

Contact your issuing authority when it is not found

Use the official website of the government that issued your passport to find its reporting process and nearest embassy or consulate. Tell them where you are, when you must travel and whether theft is suspected.

Rules differ by nationality. GOV.UK says a lost or stolen British passport must be cancelled as soon as possible. The U.S. Department of State says a reported passport is cancelled and cannot be used again even if found later. The Australian Passport Office similarly warns travellers to make sure a passport is truly lost before reporting it because it cannot be used once cancelled.

Protect the rest of your journey

• Ask the embassy or passport authority what replacement or emergency document is available.
• Check whether an emergency document is valid for your intended transit countries and route before changing flights.
• Tell the airline or tour operator if document replacement may affect departure.
• Keep hotel case numbers, police reports, replacement fees and travel-change receipts for any insurance claim.
• Never travel on a passport already reported lost unless the issuing authority explicitly confirms it remains valid.
